Telecommunications regulators in Slovakia and Czechia expand mobile coverage initiatives

Telecommunications regulators in Slovakia and the Czech Republic are taking steps to improve and clarify mobile network accessibility.

In Slovakia, the Office for Regulatory Affairs of Electronic Communications and Postal Services has launched a new interactive portal providing a comprehensive map of mobile coverage. The tool allows users to view coverage for major operators including Orange, Slovak Telekom, O2, and SWAN (4ka). Notably, the map provides granular data, allowing users to filter by technology (2G, 4G, 5G) and specific frequency bands, such as the 700 MHz or 3.6 GHz layers.

In the Czech Republic, the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) has doubled its requirement for mobile coverage in underserved areas. Following discussions with the Association of Local Municipalities, the regulator is proposing that operators cover 600 locations currently lacking signal. This requirement is intended to be part of the conditions for new radio frequency allocations for O2, T-Mobile, and Vodafone. The plan aims for operators to gradually cover at least 500 basic settlement units by the end of 2034, with a specific focus on improving connectivity in rural, mountainous, and railway corridor areas to enhance safety and economic viability.
