Telecommunications regulatory changes underway in Mexico and Spain

In Mexico, the government has proposed new general guidelines for the ‘Protection of Audience Rights’ through the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. While the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum states these measures aim to protect citizens from false information and ensure veracity, critics and journalists argue the proposal could serve as a mechanism for censorship and impact media freedom.

In Spain, the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) has initiated a process to deregulate the television signal broadcasting market. This move aims to liberalize the sector by allowing Cellnex to replace current regulations with voluntary commitments. This follows similar deregulation processes for other telecommunications markets, such as the access to Telefónica’s ducts and poles, though the latter faces opposition due to proposed price increases.
