Teledyne and NASA partner to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology

Teledyne Energy Systems is collaborating with NASA to advance its Hydrogen Electrical Power System (HEPS) for use in space exploration. Under a Space Act Agreement, the partnership will work with NASA’s Glenn Research Center and Johnson Space Center to move the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 to TRL 7.

Reaching TRL 7 will require the system to demonstrate its capabilities as a prototype in a space-relevant operational environment. The HEPS is an air-independent hydrogen fuel cell designed to generate electricity without relying on an ambient terrestrial atmosphere, making it suitable for the harsh environments of the Moon and deep space.

The technology is intended to support future lunar habitats, surface infrastructure, and long-duration exploration missions that require dependable, scalable energy generation.
