Teledyne FLIR utilizes thermal imaging for tunnel safety

Teledyne FLIR is utilizing thermal imaging technology to enhance safety within intelligent transport systems (ITS), specifically for tunnel monitoring. Following the acquisition of Traficon, the company’s incident detection technology is currently deployed in over 4,000 tunnels and complex urban intersections worldwide.

Thermal imaging offers a critical advantage over conventional cameras and linear heat detectors in enclosed tunnel environments. While traditional detectors may take several minutes to trigger an alarm, thermal cameras can detect fires within ten to fifteen seconds by capturing infrared radiation regardless of visible light, smoke density, or darkness. This rapid detection allows operators to close tunnels and warn drivers, aiming to prevent secondary accidents and fatalities.

Beyond specialized transport safety, thermal imaging technology is increasingly utilized across various sectors. It serves as a vital tool for building diagnostics, electrical installations, medical applications, and industrial quality control by revealing hidden heat paths and leaks that are invisible to the naked eye.
