Telefónica and IQM to install Madrid’s first quantum computer
Telefónica and the Finnish firm IQM Quantum Computers have agreed to deploy the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid. The system, an IQM Spark model designed for research, education, and early-stage development, is scheduled to be installed at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) before the end of 2026.
The initiative aims to strengthen the region's scientific and technological infrastructure by providing universities, research centers, hospitals, and startups with direct access to quantum hardware. This access will facilitate algorithm testing and the exploration of commercial use cases, particularly in sensitive sectors such as healthcare and security.
This project marks the third deployment of a quantum system in Spain through the collaboration between IQM and Telefónica, following two previous installations at the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA). The partnership seeks to foster a local quantum ecosystem, attract technical talent, and support European technological sovereignty.
