Vivo launches Vivo Satélite satellite service in Brazil with Starlink

Vivo, a major Brazilian telecommunications provider, has launched 'Vivo Satélite', a direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity service in partnership with SpaceX's Starlink Mobile. The service aims to provide basic communication in remote areas, rural zones, and highways where terrestrial mobile networks lack coverage.

The technology allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to low-Earth orbit satellites without the need for external antennas or specialized equipment. During the initial phase, the service will be available to approximately 50 million eligible subscribers. For individual customers on specific postpaid, Lite, and Control plans, the service is free for a 12-month promotional period. Business clients can access the service free of charge for three months.

Connectivity is currently limited to essential communication and navigation tools. Supported applications include WhatsApp (text, audio, photos, videos, and voice calls), SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage, Google Messages, Google Maps, and Apple Maps. The service does not currently support high-speed broadband, unlimited internet access, video calls, or external web links.
