Telefónica divests Barcelona real estate amid merger doubts

Telefónica is undergoing significant structural changes involving both its real estate portfolio and potential market consolidation. In Barcelona, the company has divested a large portion of its former properties. These buildings, which were originally slated to be converted into community facilities under a two-decade-old agreement with the city council, have largely been sold or transferred. While some facilities remain active and renovated, many of the approximately 40,000 square meters of space have not yet been repurposed for public use.

On the corporate front, analysts are expressing skepticism regarding Telefónica’s potential acquisition of Vodafone España. A report from Berenberg suggests that competition authorities in Spain and the European Union may block the merger. The primary concern is that a combined entity would control nearly 47% of the retail mobile and broadband markets, potentially marginalizing competitors like Digi. Analysts suggest that for such a deal to proceed, extensive and potentially prohibitive corrective measures would be required.
