Telefónica España reorganizes to boost hardware and device sales

Telefónica España is restructuring its operations to strengthen its position in the growing technology device market. The company has established a new Hardware and Devices division within its consumer services unit to centralize the management of terminals, hardware equipment, and the entire supply chain.

To lead this new division, Telefónica has hired Alberto Ruano, the former General Manager of Lenovo for Spain and Portugal. Ruano is scheduled to take his position on October 1, reporting to Chief Revenue Officer Óscar Candiles.

The move follows significant growth in device sales; between January and August 2026, Movistar sold 900,000 devices, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Notably, 42% of these sales were non-smartphone categories, including smartwatches, tablets, and televisions.

Simultaneously, Telefónica is reorganizing its broader technological structure in Spain. This includes integrating various Spanish subsidiaries under the Telefónica Tech umbrella to eliminate administrative redundancies. Telefónica Tech has seen substantial growth, reporting global revenues of 2,222 million euros in 2025.
