Telefónica secures defense contract as former president launches consultancy

Telefónica is undergoing significant strategic shifts under its current leadership and through the post-tenure activities of its former president. The company has secured a contract worth over 5 million euros from the Spanish Ministry of Defense. This contract, awarded alongside Aicox and ADC Ingeniería Aeroespacial, aims to modernize the satellite communication infrastructure for the Integrated Information Infrastructure for Defense (I3D) by providing modem equipment for point-to-point links.

Separately, former Telefónica president José María Álvarez-Pallete is launching a new strategic consultancy business. Partnering with Luis Prendes, the former director general of the Telefónica Foundation, the venture will operate through Themis Data Group, a subsidiary of the holding company Themis Future. The consultancy is expected to focus on telecommunications and artificial intelligence, specifically addressing the inefficiencies and high resource consumption of current cloud-based AI deployment models.
