Telefónica to invest €121 million in Catalonia
Telefónica Chairman Marc Murtra has announced a €121 million investment in Catalonia for 2025. During a meeting organized by Foment del Treball, Murtra detailed the company's ongoing transformation process, which includes restructuring corporate services and adjusting staff in Spain and Germany to increase competitiveness.
Murtra emphasized the importance of technological sovereignty, warning that it is “extraordinarily dangerous” for Europe, Spain, and Catalonia to depend on non-European critical technologies for defense and infrastructure. He argued that democratic stability requires a robust defense industry backed by local technological and industrial capacity.
In Catalonia, Telefónica currently maintains approximately 1,043 employees and a base of 6.48 million connections, including mobile, fixed broadband, and television services. The company also contributes to the regional technological ecosystem through initiatives such as the AI Gigafactory in Tarragona and Edge Computing nodes in Barcelona and Terrasa.
