Teleférico Mukumbarí reopens in Mérida, Venezuela

The Mukumbarí Cable Car system in Mérida, Venezuela, has resumed commercial operations as of Wednesday, August 19. The system, which is one of the highest and longest in the world, had been closed since May due to maintenance and electrical system upgrades.

Tourism Minister Daniela Cabello stated that the reopening was delayed from its original August schedule due to logistical issues caused by a double earthquake on June 24. The seismic activity delayed the arrival of essential equipment required to complete maintenance works focused on user safety and full operational capacity.

Technical improvements included the installation of new frequency converters, reconnectors, and the reconfiguration of the grounding network to protect against electrical fluctuations. The Chamber of Tourism of Mérida (Caturem) had previously expressed concern regarding the closure, noting its impact on local entrepreneurs and the regional economy. The cable car will operate daily for the remainder of the vacation season.
