Telegram briefly removed from Apple App Store over child sexual abuse content
For about an hour this week, Apple removed the Telegram messaging app from its App Store after detecting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) within the platform. Apple restored the app once the offending content was removed, prompting scrutiny of the tech giant’s content‑moderation approach, especially as rival platform X remained available.
The incident comes amid broader legal pressure on Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov, who faces investigations in France and Russia over alleged facilitation of illegal activities. With more than a billion users worldwide, the brief removal highlighted the challenges of policing large‑scale communication services.
