Telegraph releases 2026 list of 650 UK's best pubs, highlighting 29 in the North East and 18 in Greater Manchester

The Telegraph’s panel of six experts compiled a new guide of the 650 best pubs across the United Kingdom for 2026, expanding from the 500‑pub list published the previous year. Pubs were assessed on character, welcoming staff, historic ambience and quality of beer.

The list includes 29 establishments in the North East, ranging from Newcastle’s Free Trade Inn and the historic Bodega to the coastal Ship Inn in Alnwick and the traditional Grey Horse in Consett. Eighteen pubs from Greater Manchester also made the guide, such as the Victorian‑era Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar, the Grade‑II‑listed Peveril of the Peak, and the historic Britons Protection, noted for its role during the Peterloo Massacre.

Will Hawkes, the Telegraph’s beer, food and travel journalist, said, “Despite desperate operating conditions, Britain still has hundreds of magnificent pubs, offering warmth, atmosphere, character and fantastic drinks.”
