Telehealth technology enables emergency life-saving surgery in remote Vietnam
Telehealth systems are facilitating critical medical interventions for patients in remote areas of Vietnam. In a recent emergency, specialists at Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi provided remote guidance to doctors in Lao Cai province to treat a male patient suffering from severe multi-trauma following a traffic accident.
The patient presented with traumatic brain injury, liver damage, and fractures, eventually entering severe hemorrhagic shock. Due to the high risk of death during a two-hour transfer to Hanoi, experts utilized a telemedicine consultation to coordinate immediate local surgery. Specialists from Hanoi guided the local team through temporary hemorrhage control before mobilizing a specialized vascular surgery team and equipment to Lao Cai to perform a complex procedure involving an artificial artery graft.
In Mai Chau, the Young Doctors Club at the Mai Chau Regional Medical Center is also expanding healthcare access through community initiatives. These efforts include free periodic health screenings, clinical examinations across multiple specialties, and free medication distribution for disadvantaged families and policy beneficiaries. The club also conducts health education in schools and provides nutritional support for inpatient treatments.
