Telemedicine expands healthcare access and patient retention in Brazil
Telemedicine is increasingly being utilized in Brazil as a strategic tool to improve healthcare efficiency and patient retention. By offering virtual consultations, clinics can expand their service portfolios and address a wider range of patient needs without requiring physical displacement. This approach helps clinics retain active patients by providing specialized services that might otherwise be sought elsewhere, thereby creating predictable revenue streams and optimizing existing clinical spaces.
In the public sector, the Ministry of Health defines telehealth as a complementary strategy to in-person care, encompassing teleconsultation, teleorientation, telemonitoring, teletriage, and telediagnosis. Data from the Ministry of Health indicates significant usage, with over 2.5 million telehealth appointments recorded in 2024. This digital model aims to reduce waiting times for low-complexity cases and alleviate pressure on in-person medical services.
Beyond the public system, the supplementary health sector also shows significant scale. According to the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), Brazil had over 53 million health insurance beneficiaries as of May 2026, representing a growth of approximately 1.9% compared to the previous year.
