Telenor charged with complicity in crimes against humanity in Myanmar

Telenor has been charged in two separate investigations regarding its former operations in Myanmar. The Norwegian telecommunications company is facing allegations of complicity in crimes against humanity and potential violations of sanctions laws.

Kripos is investigating whether Telenor Myanmar Ltd. (TML) repeatedly provided historical customer traffic data to the Myanmar military regime between the February 2021 coup and the sale of the subsidiary in March 2022. This occurred during a period when the regime was accused of widespread atrocities against the civilian population.

Separately, the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) is investigating possible breaches of sanctions regulations. This investigation concerns the sale of TML, which allegedly included sanctioned surveillance equipment without required authorization from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following a decision by the Oslo District Court, authorities from both Kripos and PST conducted searches at Telenor’s headquarters in Fornebu on Tuesday. Telenor stated in a stock exchange announcement that no individual employees are currently charged or under investigation.
