Telenor investigated for suspected crimes against humanity in Myanmar

Norwegian authorities have launched an investigation into Telenor ASA regarding its former operations in Myanmar. The Norwegian Police Service (Kripos) and the Police Security Service (PST) conducted a raid on Telenor’s headquarters in Fornebu, Oslo.

The investigation focuses on suspected breaches of the Sanctions Act and potential complicity in crimes against humanity. Human rights experts allege that the telecommunications company provided data on over 18 million users—including call and location information—to the Myanmar military junta. It is further suspected that surveillance technology was provided to companies linked to the military, potentially aiding in the tracking of dissidents, politicians, and anti-junta activists.

Telenor Media Relations Director David Fidjeland stated that the company acted under extreme duress, noting that employees faced risks of imprisonment, torture, or the death penalty if military orders were not followed. The company stated it has been in dialogue with prosecutors and has provided extensive documentation to assist the investigation. No individuals have been charged at this time.
