Emmy Awards viewership declines as Academy negotiates move to Prime Video

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, saw a viewership decline of approximately 9 to 10 percent compared to last year, drawing roughly 6.7 million viewers on NBC and Peacock. The drop follows the ceremony's shift from a Sunday to a Monday broadcast, which placed it in direct competition with Monday Night Football. Despite the lower linear ratings, social media engagement surged by 90 percent, reaching 133 million views.

Apple TV’s ‘Widow’s Bay’ dominated the awards, setting a new record for a comedy series with 14 wins. ‘The Pitt’ secured its second consecutive win for Outstanding Drama Series. The ceremony's results highlight a continuing trend where streaming-based programs dominate major award categories.

Simultaneously, the Television Academy is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Amazon Prime Video regarding future broadcasting rights. If an agreement is reached, it would mark a historic shift, moving the awards from traditional broadcast networks to a streaming platform for the first time since the ceremony's inception in 1949.
