Television buying guide: factors for size, resolution, and sound
When purchasing a television, several technical factors influence the quality of the experience, including screen size, resolution, panel type, and audio performance.
Screen size should be determined by the viewing distance between the sofa and the device. A common guideline suggests a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen width. For distances around 2.5 meters, 50 to 55-inch screens are recommended, while 55 to 65-inch models suit distances of 3 meters or more.
Regarding display technology, 4K resolution is currently the standard for most domestic uses, as 8K content remains limited. Panel types vary: OLED offers deep blacks and high contrast, while LED and mini LED technologies provide higher brightness, making them better suited for well-lit rooms. Refresh rates, such as 120 Hz, can improve motion fluidity for sports and gaming through better frame distribution and motion interpolation, though the benefits for standard 24 fps streaming content depend on the TV's processing capabilities.
Because modern televisions are often thin, audio quality is frequently a weak point. Investing in a soundbar—such as models from JBL or LG—can significantly improve dialogue clarity and immersion. Current market options include QLED models from Samsung and TCL, which offer various features like HDR support and smart integration.
