Television series trends: Miniseries appeal versus the impact of sequels

Recent discussions in television media highlight both the appeal of concise storytelling and the pitfalls of commercial expansion in streaming series.

Short-form miniseries are noted for providing complete, immersive narratives that can be consumed quickly. Examples include the British series ‘Adolescence’ (2025) on Netflix, which uses continuous single-shot episodes to depict a murder investigation, and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ (2020), which follows a chess prodigy’s rise and personal struggles.

Conversely, the trend of extending successful limited series into multiple seasons for financial gain is criticized for diluting original creative visions. Shows such as ‘13 Reasons Why’ and ‘Big Little Lies’ are cited as instances where high viewership led studios like Netflix and HBO to produce additional seasons that some argue undermined the impact and integrity of the initial stories.
