Telluride Film Festival kicks off with major premieres and awards buzz

The 53rd Telluride Film Festival has commenced, featuring several high-profile premieres that are positioning filmmakers and actors for the upcoming awards season. Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine,” a dark comedy-thriller starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, has generated significant buzz following its successful run in Venice. The film, which follows CIA agents on Easter Island during the 1973 Chilean coup, received a lengthy standing ovation at Telluride. Malkovich was also honored with the festival’s Golden Medallion for his body of work.

Other notable screenings include the world premiere of “Elsinore,” starring Andrew Scott, and “The Debut,” starring Julianne Moore. The festival also featured a surprise screening of “You Can See Everything,” an A24 documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. The film provides an intimate look at Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, in the days leading up to her imprisonment.

The festival lineup includes a diverse range of titles, such as “Club Kid” by Jordan Firstman and “Tender Loving Care” starring Kate O’Flynn, as the event continues to serve as a key indicator for the 2027 Oscar race.
