Telus and Bell lead Canada's Wi-Fi 7 adoption

New data from Ookla indicates that Wi-Fi 7 adoption in Canada rose to a 4.9% sample share in Q1 2026, a significant increase from 0.6% during the same period in 2025. The growth is primarily driven by major service providers deploying new hardware.

Telus and Bell are leading the transition, with Telus PureFibre showing a 7.7% sample share and Bell Pure Fibre at 7.0%. Rogers follows with a 3.7% share, while cable operators Videotron and Cogeco show much lower adoption rates of 1.2% and 1.4%, respectively.

In terms of performance, Bell’s Pure Fibre recorded the highest median download speed for Wi-Fi 7 at 988.70 Mbps, followed by Rogers at 895.38 Mbps. The report also noted that fibre connections offer significantly faster upload speeds and lower latency compared to cable.

Despite the progress in newer technology, older Wi-Fi 4 equipment remains prevalent, accounting for approximately 10% of samples. Ookla highlighted that median downloads on older generations often fail to meet national targets, suggesting that proactive router replacement is necessary for digital equity.
