Tema Port: IEAG demands probe into reported MSC office assault
The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has called for an impartial investigation into a reported assault at the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) office located at Tema Port. IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Asaki Awingobit condemned the violence and stated that anyone found responsible must be dealt with according to the law.
The Association warned that the incident is a symptom of growing operational frustrations at the port. Traders, including importers, exporters, and clearing agents, are facing persistent delays regarding shipping invoices, payment confirmations, and the release of containers. These delays are resulting in increased costs due to demurrage, rent, and storage charges.
Further disruptions were noted at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3, where more than 120 trucks were reportedly delayed due to terminal operations. The IEAG cautioned that if these underlying grievances and operational bottlenecks are not addressed, there is a risk of further confrontations, property destruction, and threats to the safety of port workers.
