Tema Port officials intercept undeclared firearms from the US

Customs officers at Ghana’s Tema Port intercepted an assault rifle, two pistols, and 610 rounds of ammunition concealed within a shipment of personal effects arriving from the United States. The seizure occurred at the Golden Jubilee Terminal on Friday, September 25, 2026, after a routine inspection led to a more detailed examination of the undeclared consignment.

Florence Asante, the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Communications and Public Affairs at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), stated that the discovery is part of intensified scanning and physical examinations intended to prevent the illegal importation of restricted items. The seized weapons and ammunition have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Under Ghana’s Arms and Ammunition Act, 1972, firearms and ammunition are classified as restricted goods requiring permits from the Ministry of the Interior. The GRA has cautioned importers, particularly those receiving goods on behalf of third parties, to perform due diligence and ensure all items are properly declared and licensed to avoid legal consequences.
