Temba Bavuma sets record in Gqeberha Test against Australia

South African captain Temba Bavuma set a new record during the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha, scoring 179 runs. At 36 years and 154 days old, he became the oldest captain to score 150 or more against Australia in Test cricket, surpassing the previous record held by former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

Bavuma’s innings helped South Africa reach a first-innings total of 425/9 after a difficult start following rain delays. His performance also marked the first time since 1950 that a captain scored 150 or more in a Test innings in South Africa.

During Australia’s second innings, Bavuma drew attention for turning away while teammate Matthew Breetzke completed a catch to dismiss Steve Smith. Bavuma later explained that the reaction was due to nerves and the pressure of the moment, noting he could not clearly see the fielder positioned under the ball.
