Temelín Nuclear Power Station expands fuel storage capacity
The Temelín Nuclear Power Station is expanding its fresh nuclear fuel storage capacity to ensure energy security and operational stability in the Czech Republic. Through a two-step process implemented since 2024, the facility has added 102 new storage positions. This expansion increases the plant's fuel reserves from over two years to more than three years of operation.
The expansion involved modifying existing containers to gain 54 new spots and installing a specialized 18-ton storage grid to provide an additional 48 positions. The production, assembly, and testing of this custom storage grid were handled by Škoda JS, a member of the ČEZ Group.
Temelín maintains fuel supply contracts with Westinghouse and Framatome. The plant has also recently received permission from the State Office for Nuclear Safety to use new fuel from Westinghouse. Since the beginning of the year, the station has produced 12.5 terawatt-hours of electricity.
