Temelín Nuclear Power Plant reactor block 2 undergoes unplanned shutdown

The second reactor block at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant in the Czech Republic was unexpectedly shut down and disconnected from the grid due to a malfunction in the non-nuclear control system. The operator, CEZ, reported that the issue was caused by a faulty electronic card in a control cabinet.

Technicians identified the problem and replaced the electronic card. Following the replacement, the reactor was reconnected to the grid and began restoring power production, with expectations to reach full capacity by the following night. The first reactor block remained unaffected and continued to operate at full power throughout the incident.

This shutdown occurred only months after a major annual maintenance period in which fuel elements were replaced. The Temelín plant, located less than 60 kilometers from the German border, has experienced other unplanned technical issues earlier this year, including a bearing replacement in January and turbine-related incidents in 2024.
