Temperature and climate control impact electric vehicle battery autonomy

Temperature fluctuations significantly impact the performance and autonomy of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), lithium-ion batteries perform best within moderate temperature ranges. In extreme heat or cold, energy is diverted to maintain the battery within its optimal operating range, which can cause temporary variations in driving range.

In the context of electric buses, climate control systems represent a major energy drain. A technical study by SAE International found that intensive use of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) can reduce autonomy by 20% to 40% in temperatures ranging from -5°C to 45°C. Unlike diesel vehicles, where climate control consumes additional fuel, EVs must draw all cooling and heating energy directly from the same battery pack used for propulsion.

Modern thermal management systems are designed to mitigate these effects by automatically regulating battery temperatures. In regions like Colombia, the impact may be less severe than in markets with sub-zero temperatures, as the technology is built to adapt to diverse environmental conditions to ensure stable and efficient performance.
