Temperature fluctuations may influence circadian rhythms and sleep quality

Research suggests that room temperature may significantly influence the human biological clock and overall sleep quality. While light has traditionally been viewed as the primary regulator of the circadian rhythm, recent studies indicate that temperature fluctuations during the night may also play a crucial role.

Anthropologist Gandhi Yetish, who has studied sleep patterns in indigenous communities such as the Tsimane, Hadza, and San, observed that sleep schedules in these groups do not always align strictly with light and dark cycles. This has led to increased scientific interest in temperature as a potential regulator.

Studies have shown that as the body prepares for sleep, its internal temperature naturally begins to drop. One 2007 study found that participants sleeping in environments where the temperature decreased gradually during the evening and rose toward the morning showed higher melatonin levels and felt more rested compared to those in a constant temperature environment.
