Tempi train accident trial: Prosecutors seek access to station master's phone
The trial regarding the Tempi railway disaster continues at the Larissa Court of Appeals, with significant developments concerning the investigation into the night shift station master. The prosecutor has proposed a formal request to lift the privacy of the station master's mobile phone to allow for a thorough examination of calls, messages, and applications such as Viber, as well as the inspection of SIM and memory cards.
This request follows testimony from the daughter of deceased driver Georgios Koutsoumpas, who highlighted concerns regarding an eleven-minute communication gap between station masters and drivers after the train left Larissa Station. Furthermore, a technical consultant's report has raised allegations of potential interference with audio recordings from the Larissa Railway Station recorder.
During the proceedings, several witnesses provided emotional testimonies. A survivor from the fifth Intercity carriage described the collision as sounding like a bomb, detailing the immediate chaos, smoke, and fire. Additionally, family members of the victims, including the mother of Vaios Vlachos, testified regarding the lack of organized state support and the perceived deficiencies in the initial investigation into the cause of the fire.
