Tempi railway tragedy trial continues with survivor and victim testimonies

The trial regarding the Tempi railway tragedy continues at the Larissa Court of Appeals, featuring emotional testimonies from survivors and relatives of the 57 victims.

Survivors described the harrowing moments of the collision, with one passenger, Maria Lazaridou, recounting the loss of her infant child and the psychological trauma that persists. Another survivor, Anastasios Koumbouris, detailed his narrow escape from the burning carriages.

Relatives have raised serious allegations regarding safety failures and the handling of the deceased. Sofia Stefanaki, daughter of buffet worker Maria Mourtzaki, testified that her mother had previously reported issues with the automatic braking system, which was reportedly deactivated to prevent schedule delays. Stefanaki also criticized the handling of her mother's remains, stating the coffin arrived in Crete sealed and that the family was denied access to personal belongings.

Other witnesses, including Panagiota Kalatzi, described the severity of injuries, comparing the impact on her son to a nuclear explosion. Families have also questioned the cause of the fire, with Adam Adamakis challenging the role of transformer oils. The proceedings have also highlighted ongoing disputes regarding the delay in performing exhumations for toxicological testing, with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki identifying a laboratory in the Netherlands capable of such work.
