Tempi railway accident trial hears emotional victim family testimonies

The trial for the Tempi railway accident, which resulted in 57 deaths on February 28, 2023, continued at the Larissa Court of Appeals with emotional testimonies from the victims' families.

Dimitris Koutsopoulos, father of 21-year-old student Anastasios Koutsopoulos, testified that his son survived the initial collision but perished in the subsequent fire. He highlighted that an emergency 112 call was activated from the victim's mobile phone, which contained audio recordings of his son's voice. His wife, Vasiliki Koulpa, also provided testimony, describing the harrowing search for their son and the recognition of his voice in the emergency recordings.

Another victim's father, Panos Routsi, testified about the aftermath of the tragedy and his decision to conduct a hunger strike at Syntagma Square to demand answers. He expressed frustration with government officials and criticized the handling of evidence and investigations, stating that the wound of the tragedy remains open.
