Temple of Apollo sites in ancient Greece

The Temple of Apollo is a significant religious site found in various locations across ancient Greece, most notably at Delphi and on the island of Naxos.

In Delphi, the sanctuary is situated on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. It served as a major Panhellenic religious center and home to the Pythia oracle. The site underwent several reconstructions, including a Doric peripteral temple rebuilt in the 4th century BCE following an earthquake. The sanctuary was eventually closed due to the suppression of pagan cults by Emperor Theodosius I.

Another prominent Temple of Apollo is located on a small islet near the Naxos port. This 6th-century BCE structure is known for its large six-meter doorway, called "Portara." The temple is uniquely oriented toward the sacred island of Delos, a major cult center dedicated to Apollo and Artemis.
