Temple of Olympian Zeus undergoes structural conservation in Athens

The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens is undergoing an extensive conservation and structural consolidation project to protect its ancient remains. The intervention includes structural studies, archaeological research, and conservation work on damaged elements. Large scaffolding around several columns is a visible part of this ongoing process.

The project, titled ‘Consolidation and conservation of the Temple of Olympian Zeus’, is supported by public and European funding. While the work represents a new stage of progress, it is a continuation of efforts that have been underway for several years.

Originally begun in the 6th century BC during the Peisistratid period, the temple was not completed until the 2nd century AD under the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The monumental structure was built using Pentelic marble and originally featured 104 Corinthian columns, approximately 17 meters in height.
