Temple wearable shows strong correlation with brain blood flow

Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato, has released findings from a second validation study regarding Temple, a wearable device designed to monitor brain blood flow changes. The research, currently a preprint submitted for peer review, suggests that the device’s BrainFlow index correlates more strongly with brain blood volume alterations than with scalp signals.

The study utilized time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) to differentiate between signals from deep brain tissue and superficial scalp layers. Researchers conducted 60 sessions involving 44 healthy young adult men, subjecting them to three physiological challenges: a 30-degree head-down tilt, a stand-to-squat transition, and a stand-to-supine transition.

Results showed median lag-adjusted correlations between the Temple BrainFlow index and brain-layer oxygenated haemoglobin changes of 0.912 for the head-down tilt, 0.843 for the stand-to-squat, and 0.839 for the stand-to-supine. In comparison, correlations with scalp-layer signals were notably lower, recorded at 0.494, 0.700, and 0.767, respectively. The company is moving toward a device launch in India.
