Tempted wins The Everest 2026 in major upset

The mare Tempted secured victory in the 2026 edition of The Everest, the world’s richest turf race, held at Royal Randwick. In a dramatic rematch of last year’s event, the $6.50 second-favourite narrowly defeated the heavy favourite, Ka Ying Rising, by a neck.

Prepared by trainer Ciaron Maher for the Godolphin empire, Tempted utilized barrier one to take an early lead in the straight. The Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising, trained by David Hayes, was seeking his 23rd win from 25 starts but was unable to overhaul the leader despite a strong late charge. Joliestar finished third, followed by Headwall in fourth.

The race, held on a soft 5 track before a record crowd of over 52,000 spectators, featured a total prize pool of $20 million. This victory marks Ciaron Maher’s second win in The Everest.
