Temuco police shooting investigation follows death of hip-hop artist

An investigation is underway following the death of 37-year-old Gabriel Eduardo Utrera Sanhueza during a police operation in Maquehue, Temuco, on August 17. Carabineros reported that Utrera’s vehicle fled during a checkpoint inspection and subsequently attempted to run over an officer. The officer fired two shots, striking Utrera in the chest, which resulted in his death.

While the Prosecutor's Office has indicated that preliminary findings suggest self-defense, the family of the deceased is questioning the circumstances and has announced legal action. A significant point of contention is that the officer involved was not wearing a body camera. A general from the IX Zone of Carabineros acknowledged that the institution currently lacks sufficient body cameras and is in the process of acquiring new equipment.
