Tenants may be entitled to interest on rental security deposits
Tenants may be entitled to interest payments on their rental security deposits. Under the law, landlords are obligated to accrue interest on the security deposit (jistota) held during the tenancy. This means that upon moving out, tenants have a right to receive not only the original deposit amount but also the accumulated interest.
If a contract does not specify an interest rate, the rate is determined by legal rules, often reflecting bank interest rates or those set by the Czech National Bank. It is recommended that tenants thoroughly inspect the condition of a property and document all defects in a handover protocol before signing a lease to ensure the full deposit is returned.
