Tencent reports 11% revenue growth amid massive AI infrastructure spending

Tencent Holdings reported second-quarter revenue of 204.8 billion yuan, an 11% increase year-over-year, driven by growth in domestic gaming and AI-powered advertising. However, reported net profit of 56 billion yuan fell short of analyst expectations of 61.8 billion yuan.

The company is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Capital expenditure surged 176% year-over-year to 52.8 billion yuan, a move that resulted in a negative free cash flow of 13.8 billion yuan for the quarter. Management indicated that these heavy investments in computing power are intended to drive long-term revenue through advanced models and AI applications.

Key business segments showed varied performance. Domestic gaming revenue rose 17% to 47.3 billion yuan, while marketing services revenue grew 22% to 43.6 billion yuan due to AI enhancements within the WeChat ecosystem. WeChat maintains approximately 1.44 billion monthly active users.
