Tenerife allocates funds for livestock and potato sectors

The Cabildo de Tenerife has announced several initiatives to support the island's primary sector. The local government is allocating 150,000 euros in subsidies to breeder associations to aid in the recovery and improvement of indigenous livestock breeds. This funding targets four specific entities focused on preserving the genetic heritage and biodiversity of traditional breeds, including the Canary Black Pig, Tinerfeña goats, and Canary sheep.

Additionally, the Cabildo is promoting the consumption of local white potatoes through the ‘Haz girar tu mundo’ campaign. This initiative is part of the Tenerife Island Potato Plan, which aims to strengthen the commercialization and visibility of the sector. The plan addresses challenges faced by local farmers, such as high production costs, competition from imported goods, drought, and pests, while focusing on competitiveness and self-sufficiency.
