Tenerife heat wave continues as Aemet warns of up to 37°C temperatures

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has kept heat alerts active for the Canary Islands, forecasting daytime highs of 30‑32°C across Tenerife on July 9 and isolated peaks of up to 37°C. Gran Canaria is expected to see similar or higher temperatures, with some areas possibly reaching 40°C, while the rest of the archipelago will remain warm, especially inland.

June was recorded as the 11th warmest since 1961, prompting the Canary regional government to activate high‑temperature warnings and advise residents to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure and check on vulnerable people.

Amid the summer heat, Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) launched Operation Special Summer 2026, targeting unsafe driving practices such as wearing sandals. Drivers caught with such footwear may be fined between €80 and €200 to improve road safety during the busy travel period.
