Tenerife introduces hiking fees and manages Calima weather
Tenerife is implementing new environmental fees and managing weather-related challenges for tourists. The board of directors for Teide National Park has introduced an eco-tax for non-residents accessing specific hiking trails, such as the Telesforo Bravo and Montaña Blanca–La Rambleta paths.
Fees vary based on residency and profile. Non-residents may pay up to 25 euros, while residents of other Canary Islands pay between three and six euros. Tenerife citizens and children under 14 can continue to hike for free. According to Rosa Dávila, president of the board, the measure aims to protect the national park, manage visitor flow, and fund conservation and safety efforts.
Separately, the Canary Islands are experiencing a 'Calima' event, a weather phenomenon characterized by high temperatures and significant Sahara dust levels. This episode is expected to persist until early October, with peak conditions occurring in late September. While heatwave and forest fire warnings have been lifted, the dust and heat continue to impact the region.
