Tenerife launches double‑deck buses to boost public transport capacity

Tenerife has introduced its first double‑deck buses on the southern motorway (TF‑1) serving routes 110 (Santa Cruz–Costa Adeje) and 112 (Santa Cruz–Los Cristianos), with plans for a total of 13 vehicles including service on the northern route 108 (Icod de los Vinos–Santa Cruz). The new buses raise seat capacity on these lines by 44%, expanding each vehicle from 59 to 85 seats and adding roughly two million seats a year, which could lift the routes’ annual capacity to six million travellers.

Cabildo President Rosa Dávila called the move “an unprecedented leap” for island mobility, while Mobility Councillor Eulalia García highlighted the three‑year rollout of 351 new buses and a €125 million investment that brought total bus usage to over 87 million passengers in 2025, aided by free‑fare policies for frequent travellers. The double‑deckers are over four metres tall, fifteen metres long and weigh up to 26 tonnes, equipped with high‑definition side cameras, Alcolock alcohol‑interlock, lane‑departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, individual seatbelts, USB charging ports, Wi‑Fi, double‑access ramps and special lighting for visually impaired users.

A dedicated training programme has been set up for drivers, with 90 staff slated to complete the course and 60 already finished, ensuring safe operation of the new fleet.
