Tenerife measles outbreak declared closed by health authorities

The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has officially declared the measles outbreak reported in Tenerife in June closed, following established protocols after no new associated cases were recorded.

The outbreak involved a total of six people. The index case was a four-year-old child from the United Kingdom who was confirmed after returning home following a stay in Tenerife; this case is not epidemiologically counted as part of the local Canary Islands outbreak.

Five cases were recorded in Tenerife, including a hotel worker, two hospital professionals, a law enforcement officer, and an eight-month-old infant. While symptoms were generally mild, two individuals required hospitalization. Among the four adults affected, three had no vaccination and one had received only a single dose. The infant received the vaccine following exposure.

Public health authorities activated contact tracing and monitoring protocols immediately upon suspicion of the outbreak to prevent further spread.
