Tenerife restricts pilgrimage trails due to fire risk

Authorities in Tenerife have implemented preventive measures for the upcoming Candelaria pilgrimage due to high forest fire risks. The Cabildo de Tenerife has suspended transit through ten forest paths and trails—five on the northern slopes and five on the southern slopes—starting August 13 at 18:00. This restriction remains in effect until the fire risk alert issued by the Canary Islands Government concludes. To ensure safety, officials recommend using the traditional Camino Viejo de Candelaria from the Machado hermitage as an alternative route.

To manage the expected crowds and heavy traffic, the public transport company Titsa is launching a special operation on August 14 and 15. The company will provide 20,000 additional transport spots, including enhanced services on routes 120 and 122, and new shuttle services 522 from La Laguna and 529 from Izaña. These measures aim to reduce the reliance on private vehicles during the festivities for the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands.
