Tenerife Sports Referees to Receive CPR and First Aid Training

The Canary Islands Government is launching a programme to train sports referees in Tenerife and Gran Canaria in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid. Ten in‑person sessions, each six hours long, will be delivered by the School of Health and Social Services of the Canary Islands (ESSSCAN) in partnership with the regional Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports.

The initial cohort targets officials from football, basketball, baseball, sailing and volleyball, teaching the PAS protocol (Protect, Alert, Help), emergency assessment, the survival chain, CPR techniques and airway obstruction methods. Participants will also learn how to manage bleeding, burns, fractures, seizures and metabolic emergencies until medical teams arrive. The project is coordinated with the Elder Canary Museum Foundation and the Canarian Sports Arbitration Institute (ICAD) and aims to raise safety standards across all sporting events in the archipelago.
