Tenerife to develop satellite communications teleport and control center

Tenerife is advancing plans to establish a satellite communications teleport and control center to serve as a strategic hub for space telecommunications. The project is being driven by the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER) and CanarySat, a company within the ARQUIMEA technological group.

The initiative has an official budget of 18.2 million euros, with approximately 12 million euros provided by the European Union via the Connecting Europe Facility-Digital program. The remaining 6.2 million euros will be split equally between CanarySat and ITER. The project is expected to be completed by November 2028.

Under the proposed management model, ITER may hold up to 45% of the shares in CANARYSAT Teleport Services, S.A. to ensure sustainable operation. The infrastructure aims to leverage Tenerife’s strategic location to act as a bridge between terrestrial networks and satellites, positioning the island as a technological node connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
