Tenerife volcanic activity and seismic patterns

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is characterized by its volcanic origins and diverse landscapes, including the Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island's volcanic nature is closely linked to its seismic activity; the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) reports that Tenerife experiences an average of 1,000 to 1,200 earthquakes annually.

In August 2026, 135 earthquakes were recorded near the Canary Islands, with the strongest measuring a magnitude of 3.6 on August 26. Additionally, 38 earthquakes with magnitudes between 0.5 and 1.7 occurred within Tenerife itself. While volcanic activity is under intense scientific monitoring, natural disasters such as earthquakes or eruptions remain unpredictable.

Tourism on the island varies by season and location. In December, temperatures in Santa Cruz de Tenerife average between 16.1 and 18.3 degrees Celsius, while the Teide National Park can experience temperatures near freezing and occasional snowfall.
