Teng Kai-Wei returns to MLB with Houston Astros

Taiwanese right-handed pitcher Teng Kai-Wei has been recalled to the Major Leagues by the Houston Astros. After being sent down to Triple-A Sugar Land in July, Teng has regained his velocity and form, recording 15 strikeouts in 10.1 innings during his recent Triple-A stint.

Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed that Teng will serve in a relief role rather than as a starter. The move aims to bolster the bullpen, specifically providing a long-relief option to manage multiple innings. Teng’s recent performance has been highlighted by a high usage of his ‘sweeper’ pitch.

In his recent appearance against the Oakland Athletics, Teng pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out four batters. His sweeper was a primary weapon, accounting for 16 of his 28 pitches. Despite his effective relief work, the Astros ultimately lost the game 6-7.
