Tennessee basketball players face injury and eligibility hurdles

Tennessee basketball head coach Rick Barnes provided updates on two key players during preseason media availability.

Tyler Lundblade, a transfer guard from Belmont, has begun returning to basketball activities following back surgery in August. Lundblade, who previously won Missouri Valley Conference player of the year honors, is currently undergoing rehabilitation and treadmill work. Coach Barnes noted that while the player is eager to return, the team will follow medical protocols regarding his weight-bearing progression.

Additionally, the eligibility status of transfer big man Jalen Washington remains uncertain. Following a Tennessee Court of Appeals order, Washington is currently in a waiting period regarding his fifth year of eligibility. Barnes expressed concern over the potential impact on the team's frontcourt if Washington is unable to play, noting the perceived unfairness of differing eligibility rulings across different states under the NCAA.
